HOW TO GET HERE
From Rome
How to get to the Amalfi Coast? Good question! The Amalfi Coast is not the easiest place to get to. Getting here can in fact be quite complicated. Don’t be put off though…it will be totally worth it! Planning is key!
There are a number of options to reach the Coast…all with their pros and cons…all involve connections of some sort.
Once you are here, it is a bit simpler… the only public transport options are Sita buses and in the summer, ferries.
- PLANE
- PRIVATE TRANSFER
- TRAIN
- BUS
From Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) or Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) direct to Naples.
The travel options from Naples are shown below, in the next section.
This is the most expensive option and so may not be suitable for anyone on a budget. It is perfect for groups of 4 or more, the cost per person being only slightly more than the cost of public transport.
This is the stress free option – no connections or changeovers and you are taken right to your destination – something you will appreciate even more if your lodgings are at the top of the cliff – you won’t have to carry your bags up several 100 stairs!
Bookings can be made online, well in advance of your journey. Pick ups are coordinated with flights and take place in the arrivals hall at the airport, where you will be greeted by a driver holding a placard bearing your name – a welcome sight after a long flight!

The absolute best way to reach the beautiful Amalfi Coast from the airports/train stations/seaports in Naples/Rome (especially if you are a solo woman traveller), is by private transfer. No more lugging suitcases on and off trains and buses after long, tiring flights. How good is it getting to the airport entrance to find someone there, with your name on a sign, to greet you? However I would recommend that you should do the trip on the Circumvesuviana train at least once…it is hot and crowded but very entertaining – quite an experience!
If time permits, a slight detour to Pompeii, Herculaneum or Mount Vesuvius is possible along the way – a fascinating way to spend 2 or 3 hours – amazing historical sites!
- Cost: from €100 depending on destination and season.
- Duration: approximately 75 mins depending on traffic.
If you are able to get a flight direct to Naples – fantastic! That was the easy part – now for the fun bit – not! There is no direct bus route to the Amalfi Coast from Naples. This means that you will now need to get to Sorrento in order to reach the Amalfi Coast itself – with all your luggage….a challenging task! You have three options.
The airport bus (Alibus) is the cheapest option. Departing every 20 minutes from outside Terminal 1, it will take you to Napoli Centrale, where you will catch the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento.
At Napoli Centrale, follow directions to Circumvesuviana (the regional light railway which is located on the lower level of the station) and take the train to Sorrento.
Be aware that the train will most likely be very crowded, with standing room only. It can be quite a stressful experience, especially if you have a lot of luggage. It can also be a whole lotta fun – just keep your wits about you.
This bus also makes a stop at the ferry/cruise terminal at Molo Beverello Port.
- Cost Alibus: €5 – tickets can be bought from the driver, on the bus
- Duration Alibus: – approx. 30 mins
- From 6:30 a.m. to 11:40 p.m. (Monday-Friday);
- From 6:30 a.m. to 11:50 p.m. (Saturdays, Sundays and holidays)
- Cost Circumvesuviana train: €3,60 – tickets can be bought from news stands or ticket windows
- Duration: approx. 70 mins
The second option is the Campania Express which also runs on the Circumvesuviana line. This is a tourist service operating from 16th March to 3rd November. Seats are guaranteed, the train is air conditioned and there is storage for luggage. Tickets can be purchased from the Circumvesuviana ticket office or online from the EAV Campania website.
- Cost: 8€
- Duration: 46 mins (20 minutes faster than the regular train)
The third option is to take the Curreri Viaggi bus direct to Sorrento. This also leaves from the airport (Terminal 1), approximately every 1 to 2 hours and makes stops at Pompeii as well as several other major villages along the coast.
- Cost: €10 – paid in cash to driver. Tickets can also be booked online.
- Duration: approx. 75 mins
You have now reached Sorrento…well done…nearly there!
You will now need to take a Sita Bus to reach the Amalfi Coast itself. The bus from Sorrento departs from the transit station at the Piazza Giovani Battista De Curtis (right outside the Sorrento station). This bus makes stops at all the towns along the coast and many in between if required.
Note: this bus is usually overcrowded and luggage will be stored underneath,
- Cost: 2 – 3€
- Duration: approx 45 mins to Positano/60 mins to Amalfi
If you need to go beyond Amalfi, you will have to change buses there. More info here.
The Amalfi Coast can also be reached from the south via Salerno. Trenitalia trains from Rome do actually terminate here. From Salerno you will either take a Sita Bus to Amalfi or during the summer months (April 1 to October 30), a ferry to Amalfi or Positano. The Molo Concordia pier is located directly opposite the train station in Salerno and so is the easiest to reach.
- Cost: from 16,20€
- Duration: from 85 mins
- Ferry Amalfi: 8€/35 mins
- Ferry Positano: 12€/70 mins
